For many Canadians, Europe is a very important commercial market. The Unitary Patent (UP) and the Unified Patent Court (UPC) have been created to strengthen the existing centralized European patent-granting system, and will offer users of the system cost-effective options for both patent protection and dispute settlement in Europe. The UPC and UP are set to potentially become operational in 2018.
